welcome

Matt Davis
Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for visiting my website. Lot's of info can be found here about my guitar playing, teaching, where I'm playing, the Aerial Photograph group, and more.

A big part of my musical life this year is centered around my large group, Aerial Photograph. It's a large ensemble which plays my original music.  I began writing for it shortly after finishing my undergraduate studies at Temple University in Philly and it has grown into one of my my most fulfilling musical outlets. It consists of a string quartet, several wind instruments, guitar, bass, and drums.

Many of you know about the "City of Philadelphia, 2008" project. For those of you that don't (or don't remember), that project consisted of me going out into various communities every month in 2008 and speaking with people about their lives, experiences, opinions about current events, their plans for the future, and lots of other big and little things.  I would record these conversations and then write music inspired by these people for Aerial Photograph. We would rehearse a bunch and then record this new music every month. A few days after the recording session we would do a live performance of the music in Center City Philly.  Clips of audio from the recorded conversations were woven into each composition. And to top it off, every month's new music would be available for purchase at the gig in the form of a very cool CD with handmade packaging. The communities I spoke with included seniors, recovering drug addicts, immigrants, children, religious believers, community builders, homeless, victims of crime, incarcerated people, teachers, veterans and artists. It was a beautiful year. I learned a great deal about the city, its people, myself, music, and a lot about the rights and wrongs of the way we live.

Five years have passed since "City of Philadelphia, 2008": I moved to NYC, Aerial Photograph released Ways and Means, I received my masters from the Manhattan School of Music, got married (!), played a lot of great and not so great gigs...(mostly great ones though). And now I feel ready to undertake another big original project.

Which leads me to 2013.

Every month of this year I'll explore various New York communities through music and conversation. Aerial Photograph will be rehearsing/recording the music every month and performing it at a venue within the city. And every month there will be a limited number of uniquely hand packaged recordings for purchase. I'm also keeping a blog about the experience. You can check that out Here.

Also, if you have a second, be sure to "like" the Aerial Photograph facebook page for regular updates.

Thanks for visiting and come back soon!
Gratefully,

Matt
